I downloaded a copy I found on the web and tried it out. The file starts
off text and finishes up binary, which means you can't transfer it as a
text file or you'll corrupt the data. (I managed to do an ASCII conversion
while copying the data onto a disk image for the emulator I was testing
it under. Mine blew up at $d5c and threw some errors before giving up.)

It has to end up as a text file on the ProDOS side, because it needs to
be "exec"ed, which means you need a way to change the file type. If you
get it right, you are treated to a nice message about the self-extracting
stuff, right before it runs out of disk space on your 140K floppy. So
you'll need to do it on an 800K disk (or /RAM5, or something just slightly
larger than 140K).

So, you can't copy it as text or you'll corrupt the data, and if you
convert it as binary it has the wrong file type. You either need to
key in a program that can change file types, or do it the hard way with
a few BLOADs and BSAVEs. If you've got an 800K floppy, and a type BIN
file called "shrink.exe":

create shrinkx,ttxt
bload shrink.exe,a$800,l$8000
bsave shrinkx,a$800,l$8000,ttxt
bload shrink.exe,a$800,l$8000,b$8000
bsave shrinkx,a$800,l$8000,b$8000,ttxt
bload shrink.exe,a$800,l$1900,b$10000
bsave shrinkx,a$800,l$1900,b$10000,ttxt
-shrinkx

Assuming you've got the file without any text conversions -- the file is
called ".exe" specifically to prevent software from assuming it's text --
you should have a text file called "shrinkx" with all the stuff from the
original in it. It should "exec" like a text file and unpack itself.
