My system works the same as Bill's. I'm running System 6.0.1 on my ROM
01 IIgs and have one 5.25" drive. If I turn off the Finder preference
'Check 5.25" drives on Finder start' it always shows two 5.25" drive
icons on the desktop. If the preference is on, the drive 'grinds' when
the Finder starts and only one icon is shown. This is the reason why the
preference is there; the only way the system can tell if a 5.25" drive
is plugged in is by trying to use it and this causes all the attached 5.
25" drives to make a horrible noise!
The modification to the 5.25" disk driver that some people do tells the
system that there is only one drive, so the 'Check drives...' preference
can be turned off and they'll still only have one icon on the desktop.
