NufxLib provides a full set of C functions.  The LGPL-license library, with
complete documentation, is available from http://www.nulib.com/.  Converting
these to Java classes is left as an exercise for the reader, but at least
you have known working code to start with.

As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, LZW is patented, but the patent
expires in about six months.  The current (v1.1.0) release of NufxLib
can be built without LZW and LZC support if desired.

Unisys released a statement to the effect that freeware applications
that don't manipulate GIF or TIFF-LZW images do not require royalty
payments.  To the best of my knowledge, neither ShrinkIt nor NuLib2
require royalties to be paid.
