Thanks for explaining that. I understand how it works now....I
think. I was wondering if it was like a mask that  you use in
bitwise operations using and/or/xor type operators or my other
theory was that 0 was local and 1 was network which sounds
like what you are saying.

Well, it isn't necessarily off topic for Apple II forum if you are
using a LANceGS card. ;-) I don't  have one but I am trying to
get my Mac and PC to talk via ethernet.
