Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest using the 4bit x 1mb. I meant if you
think finding 4 bit x 256k is hard you should try looking for 4bit x
1mb chips.

Actually the 4bit x 256k and the 4bit x 1mb have the same amount of
pins.
In the Ramfast the upgrade from 256 to 1mb cache is just swapping the
two
chips.

If you don't have it, let me know and I'll dig it up. 
I don't believe the built-in test will help you here. Another
possibility is
the memory test program that came with AppleWorksGS. However I prefere
using
an AE test program where possible as it has a graphic that shows which
chip
is bad
