Here's a rarity, correcting David Empson.  There ought to be an "I
Corrected David Empson" T-shirt awarded for something like this.

The first public version of Apple DOS was version 3.1.  The man who
was contracted to write Apple DOS was Paul Laughton and he talks about
the evolution of Apple DOS on his web page
