This shouldn't be surprising. Keep in mind you're arguing with the guy

That's certainly so. With Apple products, there is a collector market for
some old/rare stuff. Consider a dime-a-dozen box like a Quadra 700. You can
find these for $100 these days. On the other hand, people still ask $200-$400
for a Color Classic. A Q700 will stomp a CC performance wise but demands a
lot less $. Why? CCs are cute and relatively low production. Heck, people will
pay more for a 128K Mac in good condition than most old 68Ks fetch. People
who don't handle Apple stuff may not be aware of this since I don't imagine
that many people collect Packard Bells or Dells.
I have some Apple II stuff which most people would consider collectible too:
a ROM 0 signature edition IIgs, a //c LCD, and a '79 vintage original ][ in
its original box that looks like it did the day it left the factory, to name
three. These wouldn't be considered valuable for their performance, but I bet
people would happily take 'em off my hands.
I would have to say that our friend supertimer's sense of worth is warped
since he said back a time that he wouldn't consider these worth much, but
thinks any ol' IIgs is worth multiple $100s. If you ask me, anyone who
wouldn't want an original ][ or ROM 0 signature edition IIgs isn't much of
an enthusiast.
