Questions on Apple II GS startup

Hello,

I hope someone here can help me. I acquired an Apple II GS recently, but I
can't get it to start up properly. It has an "Apple 5.25 Drive" connected.
When the system starts up, there's a blue startup screen that shows it's
an Apple II GS, and shows ROM version 3. Then the floppy drive's red lite
comes on and the drive clunks rapidly for a bit, then it goes silent. The
system then displays a blue screen with "Check startup device!" on it.

My suspicion is that the floppy drive is bad. Is there any way for me to
confirm that? I figured out how to get into the config control panel
(CTRL-APPLE-ESC on the connected "Apple Keyboard II") but everything
looked OK in there.

Any suggestions on how to tackle this?
