I haven't looked at the format for a while, but I believe it would be
quite possible to do extended files with the current implementation of
zip.

There are other programs for the Mac, but StuffIt is used for the same
reason that we have Shrinkit - Inertia.
What really sucks about Mac transfers is that they're all enclosed in
BinHex wrappers adding about 33% to the amount of disk space and xfer
time to throw them around the net.
