    I managed to get a USR Sportster 33600 modem to operate near it's
top speed (around 31200, which is often normal, even on PC/Mac) with
no problems at all. I used ProTERM 3.1 which set the port speed to a
higher rate than the 19200 limit in the Control Panel (of course my
IIgs is highly accelerated, which may make the difference).

    Anything over 14400 on an Apple IIgs is generally overkill though,
since your mostly displaying nothing but text characters on screen. As
for file downloads, most GS-specific archives are under 800K or less
(although there are cases were generic files such as WAVs or MODs can
be several megabytes large, in which case a faster modem would be handy).
Perhaps once SIS is available or "GSWeb" under GS/TCP, then there will
be incentive to get a 28.8K or 33.6K modem.
