Exactly.  This has been my experience also.  The other trick is to
not have any interrupt eating extensions around.  This includes
screen savers and, I would imagine, AppleTalk.  This advice applies
to Macs too, as I found out on a Mac LC several years ago.

Well, lets say you ftp several megabytes of files to your UNIX
account and you wanted to download them all at once (sz *.SHK).
Extra speed would be very useful.  A simple rotary switchbox
to share the modem between a IIgs and a PC is the most economical
solution.
