Might be worth cleaning the printhead first.  I believe you can also set
the distance that the printhead is from the platen.

When cleaning the printhead, it comes out like an expansion card would,
except that there's a white clip you have to push out of the way before
it slides (read: tugged like heck) out of its socket.  Use WD-40 to clean
the head, and a cue-tip as an applicator.  

I don't remember how to set the platen distance.

Hey, Platen is an anagram for Planet.  The things you learn when you
