I think this may be the newer "compact" floppy drive mechanisms. I
started having similar troubles with a PowerBook 170; it was _very_
persnickety about reading some types (brands?) of DS/DD floppies.
High-density floppies seemed okay.
That PowerBook was a nightmare that made me very reluctant to buy
another Apple product. My IIgs, on the other hand, still works. :)
