I've all but confirmed this notion. There is definitely something wrong with
the Java VM, or something wrong with ADTPro (such as a bug).

I had some disks transfer from the Mac to Apple just fine, but then later I
had some strange error about a non-existent serial port, and something about
the RXTX pop up, but nothing else on the system had changed. Even restarting
the Mac didn't seem to fix it.
