I can't remember exactly what the solution is but _don't_ do this unless
you have full backups available.

There is a program in MostCool that I and several others ran across about
a year (or more?) ago, and it sounds like the same one you found.  It locks
a partition, and makes it completely unusable.  The fix is easy, you
just have to edit a couple of bytes in the partition and everything will
be fine again.  Now, if someone else who remembers what to edit can speak
up...
