This is incorrect. MS-DOS 3.3 was the most current version of MS-DOS when
the PCT manual was written. In my understanding, MS-DOS 5 is better at memory
optimization than older versions of DOS. I have only run MS-DOS 5 and I have
experienced no problems that can be attributed to the DOS. Plus, the new
features of MS-DOS 5 are really nice, it's a lot nicer than MS-DOS 3.3 which
I still have to use at work (yuk!).

I have used MS-KERMIT, but it drops characters. Other programs are available
on-line, like COM-AND. It supports zmodem, but the screen writes are slow
because it is trying to be fancy. For some reason, even Kermit at 2400bps
drops characters under the PCT.
If you already have a high quality Apple II term program, you should stick
with that and use the PCT's TRANSFER program.
