Re: Apple2 Archive Update

In a prior missive, Gregory Ross Thompson <gregt+@CMU.EDU> elqouently
scribed this stuff:

>Seagates develop stiction problems WAY before they should.

Stiction is usually a problem only with the older, lower capacity Seagate
drives such as the ST-277. The higher capacity drives use technology
purchased when Seagate absorbed Imprimis -- they are top-notch and very
failure-resistant.

I've had bad experiences with Conner drives being DOA out of the box or
developing bad sectors remarkably soon after formatting/partitioning. If
this was an isolated case I'd shrug it off, but it has happened much to
frequently for me to recommend Conner drives.

Here is an excerpt from the ST-11201N data-sheet showing its speed values:

       INTERNAL TRANSFER RATE (mbits/sec) _______22 to 40
EXTERNAL TRANSFER RATE (mbyte/sec) _______4 Async
EXTERNAL TRANSFER RATE (mbyte/sec) _______10 Sync
       SPINDLE SPEED (RPM) ______________________5,411
       AVERAGE LATENCY (mSEC) ___________________5.4
       AVERAGE ACCESS (ms) (read/write)__________10.5/12.0 *
SINGLE TRACK SEEK (ms) ___________________2.6 *
MAX FULL SEEK (ms) _______________________26.6 *

* Including on-board controller overhead (0.6ms less
  without overhead).

Not too shabby, would you say?

(Wanders off mumbling something about for 0-300 MB, I choose Quantum; for
>300 MB, I choose Seagate first, then Quantum (only because Quantum has
just recently gotten into the big-drive market). Sometimes, I choose
Maxtor drives of any capacity)

Be seeing you...
