The leaking was so severe and it was left so long in this state that there's a 4" radius section of the RF shield can rusted almost completely through in the general vicinity of the battery.
Amazing. I've not (yet!) encountered a leaking lithium cell. I figured they were pretty much immune to leakage unless overheated or shorted.
It is theoretically repairable but it's a lot of work, not just a matter of tacking a couple of wires here and there.
I have to admit, that's a *lot* of damage!
