I found that the best way to get the plug in was to carefully feed it
through one of the smaller holes, one row of pins at a time, "turning
the corner" once the first row was through.
I was using a ribbon cable connection to the joystick port, for an
external veroboard on which I was doing some digital I/O experiments. I
also had to get the ribbon cable around the right way for the socket, to
avoid twisting it too much.
