In most cases, it's cards not supporting certain DMA modes, whilst supporting others - which is fine _if_ your software actually bothers to issue an IDENTIFY_DEVICE command. It's not the cards at fault.
However, there are some isolated cases where some manufacturers cards simply fail, whilst others don't. We don't know the cause of the problems in these cases.
