I agree with Apple's general course of action. One of my previous
posts was just to point out just how much better I think Acorn handled
a similar transition.

Apple's actions prompted me to make the switch - to Acorn.

I'm not familiar with the Acorn transition.  Did it preserve
essentially "seamless" compatibility with the existing software
base?
