I haven't come across this limitation yet, but as mine is used
primarily for my daughters games, it is not surprising. Thanks for the
info though.

I would recommend using an ADB mouse any how, if only to free up an
additional slot (and use less power?).

The IIgs motherboard does require you add mounting brackets onto the
baseplate in different positions to the //e motherboard. As for the
back, I cut out the required section of the baseplate to accommodate
the IIgs connectors, and drilled two 10mm holes for the composite
video and ADB mouse sockets.
