I wanted to do something that looked like the windows version, but I was
sort of waffling between how to support X-windows vs. a full-screen SDL
mode. When using an X-window, it would be nice to have the debugger as a
separate window, but what do you do with the full-screen mode? Split it
into the Apple screen and a debugger panel?

FWIW, I think the full screen mode should simply be a full screen Apple II mode. If the debugger is running, have it output to an existing debugger window or output file. Of course I don't do much debugging on emu's but it just makes sense (to me) that full screen would be to use the emulated II.

As "full screen" resolutions approach 2000x1000 pixels, using the
whole screen to display Apple screens seems not only wasteful, but
ugly.

Isn't it about time to chuck the whole idea of a full screen emulator
display?
