I use .d64 images on my C64 and 1541 easily, by making the images into real
disks and back again with my PC.  I have one (1) floppy disk that I use
regularily any more, and its only purpose is to temporarily hold .d64
images.   The point is, the lines have become blurred.

What do you mean by 'real'?  You could say that about any third-party device
(CMD, MSD, etc...) that it isn't a real CBM drive, it's just emulating one.
CMD drives aren't real CBM drives, but they run software that talks the CBM
serial protocol and store the data in CBM-friendly format.

So by that definition, 64HDD is as much a CBM drive as any other third-party
peripheral.
