Before giving it up for dead, try re-writing it by doing
something that changes the configuration of the
accelerator--then change it back.

Just doing a re-write to an EEPROM will often
fix a marginal programming job.  (I presume that
the error message is prompted by getting a bad
checksum, or other inconsistent reading.)
