There are some slow servers, of course, but many download
sites will pump 500-700 kilobits/sec., which is a _very_ big
difference.

I use a cable modem that can deliver up to T1 rate (1.5 Mbits/sec),
and that makes it pretty easy to see the server speed.

When there is an occasional cable outage and I have to go
back to dialup for half a day, the shock is severe.

In other words, the "slow server" argument is mostly sour grapes.
