For 8086 couldn't you just use Turbo C++ (for DOS anyway)? It has
NICE ways of getting down-and-dirty with the hardware: geninterrupt(),
inportb(), outportb(), _AX, _BX, _CX, _DX, _CS, _DS, _FLAGS, _AH, _AL,
etc. And none of that requires an OS (hope you have TASM handy) - I
cross-compiled some test code to CP/M-86!
