Mmm, unfortunately, no. No multifinder supported by either hardware or
software.
Actually, you had it right the first time when you guessed that the
Mac came out first. Still, an Apple ][ capable of all that?! Pretty
cool, huh?
Hell, even if you never use it as a IIgs it still makes for a killer
IIe! The IIgs has a "IIe on a chip" on its logic board. Imagine
running 8-bit Apple ][ applications with at least 256K RAM, built-in
drive support, two serial ports, ADB keyboard and mouse and at almost
triple the clock speed! Needless to say that Proterm and Appleworks
3.0 ran like greased lightning.
And that's not even going into the killer wavetable sound the thing
had all the way back to 1985 when PCs were competing with the IIe for
lousiest internal speaker, the ST had a glorified SID chip and the
Apple Sound Chip wasn't to appear in a mac for two more years.
Yeah, I wish you had known about it back in the day as well... they
are a lot of fun and in their prime were incredible machines. I used
to have a pretty nice IIgs for many years and swore up and down that
I'd never part with it. Alas, it finally gave up the ghost and I
parted it out, software and all. Man, was THAT stupid! There has never
BEEN a computer I have ever owned (and I've had half a hundred or
more) that I have missed as much as that one!
If you have the means and the space, I highly recommend one. I plan on
grabbing another one (or more) myself soon (I saw a CPU w/keyboard go
for $1.25 on ebay two weeks ago).
Enjoy!
