If the PPC will at some time start to seriously lose the speed wars, I think that will be the way to go for Apple, though I'd assume they would design the hardware so that it can't resonably run standard Windows (so in fact it would still be a separate platform and thus not interfere with Microsoft territory) and ship it with OS X only (or OS XII depending on at what time this happens ;-). Then either include a PPC secondary processor for classic Apps or do the same thing they did when going over from 68k: Emulation with a fast virtual machine sort of thing and "fat binaries" for a while.
