It seems to me that Apple would be smart not to port the OS to the generic
PC line, since they would then have to get a horde of hardware companies to
write drivers for the various pieces of hardware out there.

What MIGHT make sense, is for Apple to release their OWN line of Intel/AMD
machines, with OS X, and perhaps MK Linux running on it, as well as
offering Windoze.

Why? Apple could control what hardware was sold or offered for sale with
their machines, and thus limit the various drivers needed. They could sell
the line at a much lower price to certain limited markets (like NOT
offering it to the education market, that would cut the cash flow to the
PPC line, perhaps as servers, or as a way of attracting new customers to
Apple, who might like to "move up" to the PPC line.

Offering Windoze would be a way of not starting a new war with M$ (if Apple
did that, M$ could really slow down IE and Office for the Mac, and that
would really hurt Apple big time.)

In other words, Apple would be able to be its own clone company, attracting
new customers who, in time, would move to the higher power of PPC.

But hey, lots of people offer Apple advice, and Jobs takes only his own.
