If I've been following this correctly, I think you were using a 
PowerMac.  Apple, after having people complain for years about the fact 
that they were using more expensive, non-standard drives switched to 
drives that were closer to standard.  So, some of the capabilities of 
the drive (like variable speed to write more on the outer tracks of the 
disk) were emulated in software.  This has caused problems with the 800K 
drives of older machines, including the IIGS.

800K drives that I've created on my PowerMac 7500 usually can't be read 
by my GSes drives, but the ones I make on my Quadra 650 work perfectly.

I've thought about installing an older drive in my 7500 but I don't need 
to use the floppy on it that much anymore so haven't gotten around to 
doing that.
