Like after a few more decades, maybe. We have several old lithium cells
around, including some on motherboards from the early 1980's. None shows any
sign of leaking-- not really sure lithium cells ever leak.
But, if you open the box, try out the system, and discover the lithium
cell is low, then, you have to either replace the thing or lower your price.

If it's in an unopened box, the odds are good that the stuff is in working
condition. (If it is not, tough luck. It's Apple's fault or the shipper's or
sunspots or Fate-- but, it isn't your fault. Once you open the box and test the
system, _you_ are the one who needs to back up any claims about condition.)
As Paul notes, an unopened box tweaks the curiosity of anyone handling it.
That, despite such urges, the box remains sealed only increases its value.
Bev suggests that there may be a late model ROM 3 IIgs with a Super Drive
inside. Or, there might be one of the first Woz IIgs's. An unopened box has the
advantage of possibly being whatever a prospective buyer most wants it to be.
Plus, the contents are pristine, surrounded by the original air, and untouched
by light since the day of sealing!
Your best shot at getting a good price is to forget about price-wise users
interested in performance. Instead, aim for collectors who will value the
rarity of a new IIgs in an unopened box.
