Well, the GCR encoding is just one hurdle to overcome when trying to
get access to 800k floppies.  I believe software can be used to
control the floppy controller enough to read in the raw data from the
floppy and do the GCR decoding from that.

However, there is still the problem that standard PC floppy drives
used a fixed rotation speed for 3.5" disks and the Mac and Apple II
use different rotation speeds depending on what group of tracks you
are accessing.  It is pretty much impossible for software to get
around this problem.
