GS/OS is actually very lenient with file names, but you have to remember
that GS/OS is not actually bound to a particular disk format. In general,
limitations come about because of the FST/disk format, and not from GS/OS
itself.

In theory, GS/OS can handle file names with quite literally any character
except ':'. That includes the full 256 character set, not just the printing
ASCII characters. According to "Apple IIGS GS/OS Reference," page 17, file
names can be any number of characters, but that's not quite true. The full
path name is limited by the fact that GS/OS uses a length word for file
names, so a path name is limited to 65535 characters. A file name would have
to be a bit shorter. In actual fact, System 6.0.1 limits a path name to 8K
characters--I'm not sure if that includes the length word(s) or not.

What you're really after is a different disk format and supporting FST that
supports all of the capability in the GS/OS design.
