CDAUDIO probably uses the audio command set of the original Apple CDSC
(also supported by the CDSC+ and CD-150).  This command set is proprietary
to Apple, and it was dropped in the CD-300.

The CD-300 and later models use the SCSI-2 audio command set, which is not
supported by Apple's SCSI drivers, CD-Remote utility or Media Control
Toolset driver.

Sequential Systems sell their own Media Control Tooslet driver which works
with an Apple SCSI card, that allows to you play audio with a SCSI-2
CD-ROM drive.
