And the reason for that was: there was a wee custom hardware doohicky
between the serial card and the outside serial port. It's swapping the
send line in much the same way as a null-modem cable would (pin 3 inside
went to pin 2 outside), plus a little bit of circuitry that is, I guess,
performing some automated character translation. Or something.

Interestingly pin 2 inside was wired to...nothing. So this serial port
mod means it can send but not receive.

Bypassing the mod and kludging some...interesting...cables/connectors
together means it can now send *and* receive.

Time for a coffee.
