Re: Apple II VGA video card and the IIgs
A few hundred if you hit a home run. The CFFA is a great example:
1st Run: 100 boards
2nd Run: 200 boards
3rd Run: 100 boards
4th Run: In production - Aprox 180+ people commited.
This product sold extremely well despited the fact that there is an
installed base of Focus Card, Apple SCSI, Ramfast, Micro Drive systems
already out there. I'm sure there is some overlap.
Lets look at the Uther Card:
It looks like the second run is about sold out. I don't know how big
these runs were, but I think its safe to assume that between 100 -1 90
Uthers have been sold. This is a card that is only currently usable in
an 8 bit environment due to the lack of Marinetti drivers (pending).
Likewise, not everyone yearns to browse the internet on an Apple II.
Others have LanceGS cards, Localtalk Bridge solutions, and sneakernet.
The remaining are content with dialup access.
However despite these factors, I'd consider this to be a successful
product with plenty of growth potential once the Marinetti drivers are
released.
Maybe a final way to get some sort of gage on the A2 market would be to
track completed A2 ebay auctions for a period of time and see how many
UNIQUE buyer id's exist - an arduous task indeed. There is a ton of
crap that gets cycled through there, not all of it get sold, and there
are definately some buyers that buy stuff a lot more often than others.
But you can definately get a good census of a large fraction of the A2
market by doing this - I just don't know how large a precentage of
Apple II user use ebay over a course of a year vs. getting there goods
elsewhere.
