Actually, some simple experiments suggested that they work okay.  I used
the "zero crossing" mode in the CiderPress cassette converter rather than
a real Apple II, but they should be roughly equivalent.

That said, I don't actually recommend using MP3.  WAV is a lot less
riskier than a lossy format, and 22KHz 8-bit mono is about the same size
as a high-quality MP3.

I think that results depend crucially on the actual MP3 encoder used.
The one I tried a couple of years ago delivered a result that "sounded"
just like the original, but the waveform was all over the map when
compared to the original.

For one thing, phase relationships between harmonics are almost
indistinguishable to the ear, but make a huge difference when
trying to reconstruct an approximate squarewave.
