Progress update. I got GS/OS to recognize the NEC drive at least, using your suggestions. Here's how it looks now:

IIgs -> Zip (Termination on) -> NEC (Termination off)

Zip SCSI ID is 6, NEC is 5.

The twist:

If the CD caddy is already in the drive when I boot up, I get:

"GS/OS can't read this disk (in device .NEC.CDROM.01.00) Do you want to initialize it?"

If I load the caddy after it's up and running, I get no indication from GS/OS, a flashing "BUSY" icon on the NEC LCD and the unit becomes unresponsive to the buttons on the face of the unit. It won't even eject until I power the GS off.

When trying to access CD from the Media Controller, with HS.SCSI2 set to Channel 1, I get "Error reported: $FFFF. No message available for this error." If I select AppleCDSC, I get "Error Reported: $002F. Device off line."

These behaviors happened with several standard Mac-format CD-ROMs (are these formatted HFS?), and an audio CD (just want to hear Tom Waits from my IIgs - just once...).

The Media Ctrl CP lists the following drivers: AppleCDSC, HS.SCSI2, Pioneer 2000, Pioneer 4200. Ports: .NEC.CDROM.01.00, GAME PORT, MODEM, PRINTER.

The driver(s) I installed for this CD-ROM came from the SiriusRam/NEC.CD.Driver folder, which contained NEC.Driver and CDRemote, an apparently non-functional NDA.

Currently, these SCSI files are present in the System/Drivers folder: SCSI.Manager, SCSI.CD.Driver, SCSI.HD.Driver. These are in the System/Drivers/Media.Control folder: AppleCDSC, HS.SCSI2, Media.Setup, Pioneer2000, Pioneer4200.

All of which leads me to believe that either I need the Tulin drivers, or the NEC driver is installed incorrectly. An email to Wing Cheung about the Tulin stuff went unanswered - anyone know where I can buy a copy of these?

As far as the memory tests, I have run BitBanger, MemoryTest.CL and CVTech.MemTest - all have come back error-free, and I still get the odd boot behavior. Same thing with the top off to check whether the Sirius card pushing against the case was causing problems.

A new problem has cropped up as well (or at least, I didn't recognize it before) - I can't get NDAs to install. They seem to copy properly, but never show in the NDA list. There is a shareware program on my FocusDrive (forget the name of it) that is supposed to install NDAs and CDEVs. If I use that, they show up in the list, but they don't run. And, after selecting any of these newly-installed NDAs, GS/OS stops refreshing/redrawing desktop items (icons, open windows, etc.) until I reboot.

Finally, I checked the SCSI card as you suggested, Bill. As I suspected, the diode mod has not been made. Time to dust off the soldering iron, I suppose. Just as well. My skills have become rather rusty over the years.

Mike
