Isn't it about time to chuck the whole idea of a full screen emulator
display?

Not necessarily, for two reasons:

Fullscreen mode provides an "immersive" emulation experience, which isn't
necessarily important to developers, but I'm sure it has a lot of appeal
for gamers.

Secondly, if you're using an emulator to develop graphics for the A2,
fullscreen mode (with scanlines) gives a much better idea of how things
actually look than will the unnaturally sharp pixels of a small emulator
window.

I agree. The SDL approach can allow both easily enough though, just by
altering a parameter or two when opening the graphics context.

The main problem with fullscreen these days is that the screens are
getting so big :-) It's common for displays to be 20" widescreen or
larger, and fullscreen Apple II mode on that looks kinda ridiculous

That was my point.

The native displays for the Apple are small, and *don't* look
particularly blurry. They are designed to subtend a relatively
narrow visual angle.

Further, do full-screen renderings of the Apple screen use
interpolated resampling, or do they just multiply the width
and height of pixels (which would make even hi-res look like
lo-res).
